Butyl Rubber Waterproof Membrane in the Leakage Repair Project of an Industrial Plant

Construction Process: Substrate Cleaning → Reinforcement Treatment of Details → Full-Surface Adhesive Application of Specialized Repair Waterproof Membrane → Edge Sealing Treatment.

Substrate Cleaning:

Thoroughly clean the surface of the roof panel of garbage, dust, and stains. Remove aged and cracked waterproofing and sealing materials, clear accumulated debris from gutters and eaves, and repair damaged areas of the roof panel.

Reinforcement Treatment of Details:

Re-tighten loose fasteners on the roof, replace corroded fastening screws, and use rivets to fasten areas where lap joints have opened or deformed. Additionally, temporarily remove steel strips that were added later, mark them, and reinstall them after the main waterproof membrane has been laid.

Strengthening Treatment:

Strengthen areas such as metal panel lap joints, standing seams at ridges, and intersections between flat and vertical surfaces using specialized repair waterproof tape. Taking the connection between skylights and metal roof panels as an example: during construction, first remove the reinforcing steel strips, clean the lap edges and fastening strips, apply a 100mm wide specialized repair waterproof tape for sealing and strengthening, repeatedly roll or press to ensure compaction, and then reinstall the reinforcing steel strips after the main membrane is laid.

Full-Surface Adhesive Application of Specialized Repair Waterproof Membrane:

Ultra-resistant membrane butyl rubber sealing, waterproofing, and protective membrane.

A full-surface adhesive system using a specialized repair waterproof membrane is adopted for the overall renovation of the metal roof. This system integrates the weatherability of fluoropolymer film with the excellent air and water tightness of ultra-resistant butyl rubber, offering multiple functions such as high weatherability, sealing waterproofing, aging resistance, self-cleaning, and reflective heat insulation. Before construction, lay out the membrane for pre-positioning. Arrange the naturally relaxed waterproof membrane rolls along the contour of the existing roof steel panels, ensuring flatness and straightness without distortion. The overlap width for long and short edges should be no less than 80mm. Perform appropriate cutting to ensure that short-edge overlaps are located within the valleys of the original profiled steel sheets.

When laying the waterproof membrane, the long edge should be parallel to the eaves, proceeding from the low point to the high point along the water flow direction. During construction, first peel back the release film at the end of the membrane roll by 30-50cm, lay it flat onto the roof panel, allowing the adhesive surface to contact the metal panel naturally. Roll up the removed release film from under the finished membrane roll to avoid uneven pulling that could wrinkle the membrane. While laying, use a squeegee to press the membrane, ensuring close contact with the substrate. Roll or press repeatedly to compact the overlap areas. For slight depressions in the roof panel, use a squeegee to evenly press the membrane into the depression, ensuring complete adhesion between the membrane and the substrate.

Before overlapping, modify the membrane surface at the overlap area by applying a thin layer of fluorine-based surface modifier. Complete the overlap within 2 hours after the modifier becomes dry to the touch. For loose metal panel lap joints, fasten with rivets before coating and applying the membrane, and use a homogeneous tape for reinforcement.

Edge Sealing Treatment:

Use battens for waterproof edge sealing, then reinstall the reinforcing steel strips to ensure the integrity of the roof.

Construction Precautions:

Waterproofing construction should be carried out at ambient temperatures above 5°C. Do not perform construction during rain, snow, or in winds exceeding grade 5.

Before construction, ensure proper drainage measures are in place to allow for timely rainwater drainage. Additionally, increase ventilation equipment to enhance air circulation over the roof area.

Due to strong light reflection from the white membrane surface, workers should wear sunglasses to protect their eyes.

Implement safety measures around the perimeter of roofs with low parapets to ensure construction safety.

Do not stack membrane rolls centrally on the roof to avoid localized overloading that could deform the roof substrate. Also, avoid walking or dragging items on the laid membrane to prevent damage to the completed waterproofing.
