Introduction to medical hot melt adhesive
Medical hot melt adhesive is an environmental friendly hot melt adhesive with raw materials conforming to international FDA standards, which is not sensitive to skin. With the continuous innovation of medical supplies, medical hot melt adhesive is playing its unique role more and more. It was used for the bonding of medical supplies materials early on, and now its greater role is as the carrier of medicine and skin fitting. Due to the unique properties such as good coating property, hypoallergenicity and stability of hot melt adhesive, medical adhesive tape and medical adhesive tape are also more widely used.
The hot melt adhesive used in medical treatment is mainly hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive, used as wound coverage, detection instrument fixation, drug delivery carrier and surgical zipper and skin bonding. This hot melt glue must have good adhesion to all kinds of skin (dry and wet), the glue is easy to remove, there will be no residue, will not harm the skin, etc. As a hot melt adhesive used in medical treatment, its advantages are in the adhesive coating maneuverability, low skin allergy adhesive, adhesion, permeability and glue stability of the unique characteristics.
Application classification of medical hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive products
1. Medical patches, plasters, eye patches, stomach patches, motion sickness patches and fixed patches
2. Medical tape, white cotton tape, medical rubber paste, PE transparent tape, sports tape;
3. Wound patches, infusion patches, band-aids, bottle patches and self-adhesive dressings;
4. Composite materials, operating clothes, protective clothing, masks, shoe covers, operation sheet, etc.
Examples of application of medical hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive
1. Medical patches
It is generally composed of anti-adhesion layer, backing layer and polymer gel layer. The gel layer is the main part, using spunlaced non-woven fabric, hot rail non-woven fabric, PE film as the base material, which is composed of hydrophilic polymer gel or medical pressure-sensitive adhesive as the skeleton and natural extraction components wrapped in it. The most common ones are plasters, eye patches, children's stomach patches, motion sickness patches and so on.
Base material: spunlaced cloth, hot rail cloth, PE film
Coating method: transfer coating

2. Medical tape
It is generally used for dressing and catheter dressing and fixation. White cotton tape, sports bandage, silk tape, PE punching film tape, cotton paper tape and so on are common.
Base material: white cotton cloth, non-woven cloth, PE perforating film, tissue paper, artificial silk, etc
Coating method: direct coating, transfer coating
Technical points: initial adhesion, holding adhesion, peeling, weather resistance, grinding, unwinding force, etc.;
Gluing gram weight: PE tape 25-45 gsm; Cotton paper tape 30-45gsm; White cotton tape 80-120gsm; Sports bandage and thick tape 50-70gsm;
3. Apply the wound
It is generally composed of medical non-woven cloth or medical PE/PU film coated with adhesive, water absorption pad and isolation film, used for surgical wound or dressing fixation. Common are infusion stickers, Band-Aids, dressings and so on.
Substrate: Spunlaced non-woven, hot rolled non-woven, elastic cloth, PE film, PU film
Coating method: transfer coating
Technical points: initial adhesion, sticking, peeling, weather resistance, temperature resistance, residual, glue overflow, glue penetration
Glue gram weight: infusion paste 35-50gsm; Band-aid 40-80gsm; Other dressings with 40-60gsm.
4. Composite materials
Medical composite materials are mainly used to block viruses and germs, which prevent medical staff from being infected by viruses carried by patients and various ways in the process of diagnosis, treatment and nursing. Common operating clothes, isolation clothes, protective masks, visiting clothes, nurses' caps, surgical caps, doctors' caps, maternity caps, first aid kits, all kinds of radiation protection clothing, etc.
Base material: non-woven fabric, PE PET
Coating method: spraying
Technical points: initial adhesion, sticking, peeling, odor, air permeability, resistance to hydrostatic pressure, resistance to blood penetration.
Gluing gram weight: 3-7gsm.
Requirements and standards for medical hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives
When medical hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive is used in medical adhesive tapes, elastic bandages, wound stickers, surgical incision films and other medical products, various problems arising from contact with skin must be considered, which are briefly described as follows:
1. Hypoallergenicity
Medical hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive products in use should not cause skin irritation, such as redness, itching, small papules and other allergic reactions.
2. The permeability
Hot melt pressure-sensitive adhesive products have good breathable performance, which can greatly reduce skin irritability, and make the skin breathable and breathable as usual after being covered by adhesive products. It has a positive effect on skin sweat, keeping the wound dry and accelerating wound healing.
3. Adhesive
There are dry skin and oily skin, there are more dense hair and no hair difference, and smooth and rough points. Medical hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive products can adapt to the needs of most people's skin, paste on the skin, can in humid or sultry environment, skin sweat, body fluid secretion condition, still maintain a certain adhesive force, do not produce warping and fall off quickly phenomenon.
4. Compatibility with skin
(1) The peeling strength should not be too large: the peeling strength of medical hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive products sticking to the skin should not be too large and kept within a certain limit, otherwise the skin will be tight and uncomfortable, and the hair will be painful and easy to pull up and damage the skin when removed.
(2) The initial viscosity of the skin is better: because the material is mostly used in the wound or around the wound, it should not be squeezed vigorously, so the initial viscosity of the glue product is better, and the instant can stick the skin.
(3) No residual glue after tearing: no residual glue left after tearing from the skin, especially at the edge of the adhesive material.
5. Adapt to disinfection treatment
Many applied to wound adhesive paste, wound paste need to undergo disinfection treatment, not because of disinfectant and make adhesive products deteriorate. At present, gamma ray and drill ray disinfection have little effect on glue, while hot steam disinfection may cause changes.
6. Medical tests must be carried out
(1) Cytotoxicity test: check the possible precipitated toxic substances in the adhesive.
(2) Skin irritation test: it is used to test whether there is precipitate in the gelatinized material to the possibility of skin irritation.
(3) Skin allergic test: repeat the test in different age groups and different people's skin to test the skin allergic reaction.
