High-Precision Label Hot Melt Adhesive Coating Machines for Pressure-Sensitive Labels

Label hot melt adhesive coating machines are specialized for producing self-adhesive label stock, where a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) is applied onto a silicone-coated release liner, then later transferred to the label face material. The key requirements are precise coat weight uniformity (typically ±2 gsm at 15-30 gsm), high-speed operation (200-400 m/min), and clean edge profile. Slot die coating dominates this application due to its accuracy and ability to handle low-viscosity hot melts (500-2000 mPa·s at 150-170°C). The machine includes a liner unwind, corona treater (optional), a slot die coater, a cooling drum, a laminating station for face stock, and a rewind. Temperature control across the die must be within ±0.5°C to avoid viscosity variations.

The slot die for label coating typically has a width from 300 to 1800 mm, with a coat-hanger manifold optimized for low-viscosity adhesives. The die lip gap is set between 0.05 and 0.20 mm. The backup roll is chrome-plated steel with a release finish to prevent adhesive sticking. A vacuum box upstream of the die helps remove air boundary layer. The gear pump is sized for high flow rates (e.g., 200-600 L/h). Closed-loop coat weight control uses a beta or X-ray gauge scanning the coated liner, with feedback to the pump drive. This system maintains weight accuracy within ±1.5% over hours of operation. Modern label coaters also include automatic die lip adjustment for profile control.

Adhesive handling for label coating requires careful filtration (150-200 mesh) to remove gels that would cause defects in the thin adhesive layer (20-30 μm). The melt tank should have a small residence time to prevent degradation, as many label PSAs are SBC-based and thermally sensitive. Some machines use a pre-melter with a grid plate and a buffer tank. The adhesive temperature is typically 140-160°C for SIS/SBS, but polyolefin PSAs may require 160-180°C. The hose and die must have uniform heating; any cold spot increases viscosity and creates a heavy coating streak. Operators should regularly check temperature profiles with a contact pyrometer.

Liner handling is critical because silicone-coated liners are sensitive to tension. Too much tension can stretch the liner, causing “telescoping” or “baggy edges.” Tension should be set low (0.5-1.0 N/cm width). A dancer roll with low inertia provides isolation. The liner may also have anti-static treatment to prevent dust attraction. After coating, the adhesive is cooled on a large-diameter chill roll (5-15°C) to solidify before laminating with the face stock. The face stock (paper or film) is unwound from a separate stand and laminated in a nip with controlled pressure (2-5 N/mm). The finished label roll is rewound with taper tension to prevent blocking.

Common defects and solutions: “Orange peel” (rough surface) – increase temperature to lower viscosity, or reduce line speed. “Stringing” at edges – adjust edge air jets or reduce edge bead with die bolts. “Missing coating” due to air entrainment – increase vacuum or use a grooved backup roll. “Gauge bands” (periodic weight variations) – check pump pulsation; install a damper. “Silicone transfer” – if adhesive picks up silicone from liner, change liner grade or adjust laminating pressure. Regular maintenance includes cleaning the die lip every 8-12 hours, replacing filters every shift, and calibrating the coat weight gauge weekly. By optimizing these parameters, label hot melt adhesive coating machines produce consistent, high-quality self-adhesive labels for packaging and promotional applications.
