Hot melt glue coating machine

A hot melt glue coating machine is essentially synonymous with a hot melt adhesive coating machine, but the term "glue" often emphasizes its use in general assembly, woodworking, or DIY industries. This machine melts solid glue sticks or granules and applies them as a thin film onto substrates. The core components include a heated reservoir, a pump (gear or piston), and a coating die. Temperature ranges typically from 100°C to 220°C, depending on the glue formulation. The machine ensures that the adhesive remains at a consistent viscosity throughout the coating process.

The coating process begins by loading hot melt glue in the form of pillows, blocks, or sticks. The melting unit gradually heats the glue without degrading its properties. Once molten, the glue is pumped through a heated hose to a coating head. For roll coating, a heated applicator roller picks up the glue from a doctor blade system and transfers it to the substrate. For slot die coating, the glue is extruded through a precision slit directly onto the moving web. The substrate can be paper, cardboard, nonwoven, or even metal foil.

Major applications of hot melt glue coating machines include: 1) Edge banding in furniture manufacturing, where glue is applied onto the edge of particle boards before banding tape is attached. 2) Packaging lines for carton sealing and case forming. 3) Bookbinding for spine gluing. 4) Label production (pressure-sensitive labels). 5) Filter assembly for HVAC or automotive filters. 6) Mat and rug backing. Unlike traditional water-based glues, hot melt glue sets within seconds, dramatically reducing clamp or drying time.

One of the standout benefits is the elimination of solvents, which improves workplace safety and meets environmental regulations. The machines are compact and can be integrated into existing production lines with minimal modifications. Many models offer digital temperature controllers with PID algorithms to maintain ±1°C accuracy. Some advanced versions feature pattern control (intermittent or continuous) via pneumatic or servo-driven valves. Cleaning is simplified because the glue is removed by reheating and scraping, or using specialized release agents.

For optimal performance, users should select the right glue viscosity (low, medium, or high) and softening point. Low-viscosity glues work well for porous substrates, while high-viscosity ones are better for non-porous surfaces. The coating weight is adjustable by changing the gap between the applicator roller and the backing roller. Maintenance includes periodic replacement of filters, checking hose insulation, and calibrating thermocouples. With proper care, a hot melt glue coating machine can operate for over 10 years. It is a cost-effective solution for medium to large-scale production requiring fast bonding.
