PUR Hot Melt Coating for High-Quality Perfect Binding: Process and Equipment

PUR hot melt adhesives have revolutionized bookbinding for high-end products such as art books, cookbooks, manuals, and textbooks. Unlike EVA, PUR provides flexible, durable bonds that allow the book to lay flat without cracking the spine. PUR also adheres to difficult papers (coated, glossy) and has superior heat resistance (up to 120°C). However, PUR hot melt coating machines are more complex: they must exclude moisture during processing, have shorter open time (20-60 seconds), and require careful cleanup. A typical PUR perfect binder includes a sealed melting unit (5-15 kg capacity), a gear pump, a slot nozzle or roller applicator, and a cover nipping station. The machine operates at 1000-6000 books/hour. The adhesive is applied at 110-140°C, viscosity 2000-8000 mPa·s. After application, the adhesive reacts with ambient moisture over 24-72 hours to reach final strength.

The application method for PUR can be either a roller or a slot nozzle. Roller application is similar to EVA but with a sealed chamber. Slot nozzle (also called “slot gluing”) applies a precise, consistent glue film directly onto the spine without a roller. The nozzle has a slit of adjustable width (0.5-2 mm) and is positioned a few millimeters from the spine. The gear pump meters the exact amount of glue. Slot nozzle reduces glue waste and gives a clean, uniform layer. Many PUR binders use this method. The book spine is milled and cleaned before gluing. The open time starts from the moment glue leaves the nozzle; therefore, the cover must be applied quickly. The nipping pressure and duration must be optimized: too high pressure squeezes out glue; too low gives poor bond. Some machines have heated nipping rollers to keep the glue molten longer.

Equipment design for PUR: All wetted parts (tank, pump, hoses, nozzle) are made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel. The tank has a nitrogen purge to prevent moisture ingress. A vacuum degassing unit removes bubbles. The system must have a “park” mode that keeps the glue molten but with reduced oxygen exposure during breaks. When not in use for more than 2 hours, the system must be purged with a special cleaning agent (e.g., a low-viscosity wax or PUR cleaner). If left without purge, the adhesive cures solid and the machine is ruined. Many PUR machines have an automatic purge cycle that runs after shutdown. Operators must be trained thoroughly. The cost of PUR machines is higher than EVA, but the product quality justifies it.

Adhesive considerations: PUR hot melts for bookbinding have different formulations: fast-setting (open time 20-30 seconds) for high-speed lines, and slow-setting (45-60 seconds) for thicker books. The viscosity is lower than EVA, so the coating thickness is thinner (0.3-0.8 mm). The adhesive bond strength after full cure (24h) should exceed 6 N/cm (page pull). The book should withstand a “torture test” – opening to 180 degrees and flexing 1000 times without page loss. PUR also must pass the “blocking test” – no adhesion between pages under pressure. The machine’s temperature control must be ±1°C to prevent viscosity drift. The glue consumption is about 0.5-1.5 grams per book, depending on thickness.

Defects and troubleshooting: “No bond” after 24 hours – low humidity (<30% RH); add a humidifier. “Stringing” – reduce nozzle temperature or adjust air pressure (if using air assist). “Glue oozing out of spine” – excessive coat weight or too high nipping pressure; reduce. “Delamination after heat test” – incomplete curing or incompatible paper; pre-heat paper or use primer. “Machine clogged” – missed purge; requires disassembly and mechanical cleaning (costly). To avoid clogging, install a moisture indicator on the nitrogen line. Also, use the PUR within its shelf life (typically 6-12 months sealed). Store adhesive in sealed bags; do not expose to air.

Case study: A book printer switched from EVA to PUR for a cookbook line. They installed a slot nozzle PUR hot melt coating machine with a 10 kg melter. The line speed increased from 2000 to 5000 books/hour because PUR set faster. The rejection rate due to spine cracking dropped from 2% to 0.2%. The ROI was less than 6 months.
