The melting method refers to a construction technique that uses flame heating to melt the hot-melt adhesive on the bottom layer of hot-melt waterproof membrane for bonding.
Base Treatment
Clean the surface first. The base shall be solid, flat and clean. Apply base treatment agent evenly with no bare substrate or missing coating. Lay the membrane only after the surface is completely dry.
Additional Layer Construction
Apply additional reinforcement at internal and external corners, pipe roots, gutter channels, deformation joints and other detailed parts. Lay the pre-cut membrane of required size and shape onto the base.
Large-area Construction
Unroll the membrane to release internal stress, then lay it flat according to the snapped layout lines. Heat the bottom of the membrane and the base surface with a hot-melt tool until the asphalt on the membrane melts and turns glossy. Roll out the membrane while heating, then compact it with a pressure roller for firm adhesion to the base.
Lap Joint Treatment
The lap width shall be 100mm. All lap seams shall be sealed separately by the melting method. Slightly overflow modified asphalt at the lap joint with an even strip of 3–5mm in width.
Water Closure Test
Carry out the water closure test as required by the construction plan.
Protective & Isolation Layer
Install a protective layer on the outer surface of the waterproof layer in accordance with relevant specifications and design requirements.
Thermal Adhesive Method
The thermal adhesive method is a composite construction process that uses non-curing coating to thermally bond waterproof membrane.
Base Treatment
Clean the surface and ensure the base is solid, flat and clean.
Additional Layer Construction
Make reinforcement treatment at corners, pipe roots, gutters, deformation joints and other details; cut the membrane into proper size and shape in advance.
Large-area Construction
Construct the composite waterproofing system with non-curing coating and waterproof membrane. Keep the thickness of non-curing coating compliant with specification requirements. Roll and lay the waterproof membrane simultaneously while applying the non-curing coating.
Lap Joint Treatment
Seal the lap joints separately by the melting method, with a continuous overflow asphalt strip at the overlapping position.
Water Closure Test
Perform water closure test in accordance with the construction scheme.
Protective & Isolation Layer
Arrange the protective layer on the waterproof layer as specified by codes and design drawings.
Self-adhesive Method
The self-adhesive method adopts waterproof membrane with pre-applied self-adhesive glue. It requires no hot construction or extra bonding agent for installation.
Base Treatment
The base shall be solid, flat, dry and clean, free of sanding, dust and oil stains. Level up pits and cracks with cement mortar. Inspect and accept the base before construction, then thoroughly clean it; use a vacuum cleaner or high-pressure air blower if necessary.
Application of Base Treatment Agent
Apply base treatment agent evenly before membrane laying, fully covering all bonding areas without missing spots or thick accumulation.
Detailed Node Treatment
After the base treatment agent dries, construct additional waterproof layers at detailed positions per specifications and design. Use a blowtorch or other heating equipment for auxiliary heating where the membrane is hard to adhere. Fully bond the additional layer to the base at normal positions; lay it loosely at stress-concentrated areas as required by codes.
Large-area Construction
Horizontal Surface: After the treatment agent dries, snap layout lines, unroll and pre-lay the membrane fully to release stress before formal installation. Fix the starting end first, then unroll gradually while peeling off the isolation film, constructing from low to high terrain.
Vertical Surface: Adopt full bonding between membrane and base, as well as between membrane layers. Fix the top end of vertical membrane with metal pressure strips first, then seal with special membrane sealant.
Protective & Isolation Layer
Clean the waterproof surface thoroughly after inspection and acceptance. Apply protection measures and construct the waterproof protective layer per design requirements. Set an isolation layer between the waterproof membrane and rigid protective layer, which can be low-grade asphalt membrane, plastic film, lime plaster with paper reinforcement, etc.
Wet-laid Method
The wet-laid method is mainly used for non-exposed waterproofing works, which bonds wet-laid waterproof membrane to the base with neat cement paste or cement mortar.
Base Treatment
Keep the base solid, flat and clean without sanding, dust or oil contamination.
Bonding with Cement Mortar
For cement glue paste: the powder admixture accounts for 3%–5% of cement weight.
For cement mortar: mix cement and medium sand at the ratio of 1:2. Adjust water dosage on site according to base humidity. Use Grade 42.5 ordinary Portland cement preferably. Stir the mortar evenly and scrape it onto the base.
Large-area Construction
Move the membrane to the designated position, pre-unroll it to release stress, and align with reference lines. Peel off the isolation film on the membrane back, fix one end, then push and spread the membrane while rolling with a pressure roller to exhaust air and ensure tight adhesion.
Joint Bonding
All membrane joints adopt cold self-adhesion. Stagger adjacent end joints by more than 1m. For long-side joints, peel off the reserved isolation strip on the self-adhesive edge, align with marking lines and bond directly, then strengthen and seal the edge with special sealant.
Pre-laid Method
Also known as pre-laid reverse bonding method, this process is to loosely lay polymer self-adhesive film waterproof membrane on the base first, then pour structural concrete to enable tight combination between concrete slurry and the adhesive film of the membrane.
Membrane Pre-laying
Cut the membrane to required size. Place the isolation paper side of the self-adhesive layer toward the structural layer and the other side toward the base, then lay it loosely on bedding course, retaining wall, underground continuous wall or soldier piles. For mined tunnels, directly hang polymer membrane with geotextile surface onto pre-fixed hooks.
Membrane Joints
Adopt cold self-adhesion for joints. Tear off the reserved isolation strip at the joint and bond directly to form an integral sealed waterproof system.
Reverse Bonding
Remove the isolation paper and pour structural concrete. The flowing concrete will interlock and bond closely with the adhesive film, firmly attaching the membrane to the building structure and achieving seamless rigid-flexible combination.
Steel Bar Binding
Remove the isolation paper directly for steel bar binding. No additional mortar or pea-gravel concrete protective layer is needed for the waterproof membrane.
